Black Hawk Lake Water Carnival Celebrates 70 Years Starting Friday

The Black Hawk Lake Water Carnival in Lake View is set to get underway tomorrow (Friday), and the festival is poised to celebrate an impressive milestone this weekend. Ally Leners with the Water Carnival Committee says they are excited to mark the occasion.

She says they’ll hide “disco ducks” throughout the carnival, and those lucky enough to find one of the hidden fowl will win a prize. The fun begins Friday night with the midway, beer garden, bingo, and food stands opening at 6:30 p.m. The kiddie parade is slated for 7 p.m. near the stone piers, with a hypnotist, karaoke, live music, and fireworks to close out the night. Saturday’s schedule runs almost from dawn to dusk, highlighted by the 5k road race at 8 a.m., the street parade at 1 p.m., cardboard boat races at 4 p.m., and the Parade of Water Floats at 9:30 p.m. Leners says they are all excited to welcome thousands of people to their community.

The Water Carnival winds down on Sunday, but not before players take to the pits for the mud volleyball tournament at 11 a.m. and the Little Miss Black Hawk Pageant at 4:30 p.m., and the Bill Riley Talent Show at 6:30 p.m. Leners says it can be challenging to keep a 70-year-old festival fresh and exciting, but there is also something charming about the Water Carnival’s classic feel.

Leners offers a big thank you to all of the Water Carnival’s many sponsors, as their financial contributions help bring costs down for many activities. There is a slight chance for storms Friday night, and Leners encourages people to watch the Water Carnival’s Facebook page for the weekend’s full schedule and announcement.
