Census Data Shows Marriage And Divorce Rates Declined From 2011 To 2021; Iowa Ranks 27th And 32nd Respectively

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the marriage and divorce rates among women in the United States have experienced a decline from 2011 to 2021. In 2021, the marriage rate stood at 14.9 marriages per 1,000 women, down from 16.3 a decade earlier. Similarly, the divorce rate dropped to 6.9 divorces per 1,000 women in 2021, compared to 9.7 in 2011. Iowa ranked 27th in the 2021 marriage rate ranking at 15.2, compared to 16.8 in 2011. As for 2021 divorce rates, Iowa ranked 32nd at 6.8, well below the 9.2 figure in 2011. Alaska and Utah emerged with the highest marriage rates, reaching 23.5 and 22.3, respectively. The data, derived from the 2011 and 2021 American Community Survey 1-year estimates, provides insights into the rates per 1,000 women aged 15 and older. Massachusetts recorded one of the nation’s lowest marriage rates at 11.8. Idaho and Arkansas had the highest divorce rates, with 11.1 and 11.0.
