Fr. Steven Brodersen of Carroll

Fr. Steven Brodersen, age 75, of Carroll, died Thursday, July 20, 2023 at his home near Carroll following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2023 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll.  The Presider will be Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless, Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City, assisted by Deacon Bill Black and Deacon John Rudd.  Concelebrants will be Fr. Lynn Bruch, Fr. Shinoj Jose, Fr. Patrick Behm, and Priests of the Diocese of Sioux City.  The homilist will be Fr. David Hemann.  Music will be by Kathy Halbur.  Lectors will be Peg Scheidt and Joleen Mooney.  Gift Bearers will be Pam Williams, Brian Brodersen, and David Brodersen.  Casket Bearers will be Brian Brodersen, David Brodersen, Cody Williams, Cory Bruch, Carter Bruch, and Kent Knobbe.  Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Mt. Carmel with military honors conducted by the Dedham American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll.  Visitation will pause at 5 p.m. at which time a Rosary will be prayed.  A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m.  Additional visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Thursday morning at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Kuemper Catholic School Foundation.

Fr. Steven Brodersen was born on September 7, 1947 in Laurens, Iowa to William L. and Marcella (Yender) Brodersen.  He grew up near Rush Lake, and graduated from Ayrshire High School in 1965.  Following high school Steve went on to attend Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska.  In 1970, Steve was inducted into the United States Army where he served overseas in Germany.  Following his honorable discharge in 1973 he began teaching at St. Edmund High School in Ft. Dodge.

After a few years teaching, Steve enrolled at St. Paul’s Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.  On December 28, 1985, Steve was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Milford.  He held many assignments during his years as a priest they include the following: St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll, Holy Angels Parish in Roselle,  Sacred Heart Parish in Templeton, St. Mary’s Parish in Auburn, Kuemper Catholic School President in Carroll, St. Cecilia Parish in Algona, Immaculate Conception Parish in Sioux City, Sacred Heart Parish in Boone, St. Augustine Parish in Halbur, Sacred Heart Parish in Templeton, and Holy Angels Parish in Roselle.  Fr. Steve retired from active ministry in July of 2017; however, he continued to serve local parishes when called upon.

As a gifted pianist, Fr. Steve enjoyed music and playing his keyboard.  He also enjoyed golfing, flower and vegetable gardening, making his delicious cheesecake, and traveling especially to Germany, Glacier National Park, and Hawaii.  The past few winters he enjoyed wintering in Arizona where he could escape the cold winter months.

Left to celebrate Fr. Steve’s life is his mother: Marcella Brodersen of Spencer; his siblings: Pam Williams of Titonka, Brian (Deb) Brodersen of Spencer, and David (Roxanne) Brodersen of Matlock; nieces: Deb (Lyon) Anderson of Johnson, KS, Erica (Scott) Brown of Aurora, CO; nephews: Cody Williams of Clear Lake, and Todd (Vicki) Roskens of North Liberty. As well as many other relatives, friend, and lives touched by his ministry.

Fr. Steve was preceded in death by his father; William, and a brother-in-law: Charles Williams.
