Merlin Reinart, 80 of Carroll, died Monday, July 24, 2023 at his home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 5, 2023 at Holy Spirit Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll.  The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott.  Music will be by Jane Heithoff.  Lector for the Funeral Mass will be Dave Ramsey.  Gift Bearers will be Kady Petersen, Morgan Reinart, and Willow Petersen.  Eucharistic Minister will be Linda Disburg.  Honorary Casket Bearers will be Tom Twit, Jim Millenacker, Jeff Cayler, and Mark Heino.  Casket Bearers will be Derick Petersen, Zane Petersen, Mitchell Reinart, Kady Petersen, and Morgan Reinart.  The Carroll Police Department will form an honor guard for the Funeral Mass.  Private family burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2023 at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll with a rosary at 7 p.m.  Additional visitation will be from 9-9:45 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the church.

Born on August 22, 1942, in Manning, Iowa, Merlin was the son on Clarence and Dorothy (Dufner) Reinart.  He attended St. Augustine School in Halbur, St. Peter & Paul in Carroll, and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School.  On April 27, 1963, Merlin was united in marriage to Betty Kloewer at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla.  Betty and Merlin made their home in Carroll.  Merlin attended the police academy and then began his 29 year career with the Carroll Police Department, retiring in 1997 as a Captain.

He was a member of the Jaycees for several years, coached Little League Baseball, and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan.  Merlin also enjoyed running, camping, riding RAGBRAI, fishing, playing tennis and tending to his yard.  Merlin was a member of the St. John Paul II Parish – Holy Spirit Church in Carroll.

Merlin is survived by his wife Betty of Carroll; his children: Steven (Melodia) Reinart of Blue Springs, MO, Carol (Gary) Engelken of Frankfort, KS, Jeff Reinart of Carroll, John Reinart of Carroll, and Mary (Pat) Petersen of Exira; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his sister, Marlene Tigges of Carroll; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim (Norma) Kloewer, Joan Ramsey, Mae (Ron) Franks, Leo (Gayle) Kloewer, Linda Disburg, Bill Kloewer, and Mike (Vicki) Kloewer; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Renee Reinart; his parents-in-law, Vince and Ruby Kloewer; and his sisters, Margaret Reinart and  Mary Lou Hartl.
