Two Sac County brothers have been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing the same juvenile victim. According to Sac County District Court records, the sentences for 45-year-old Eugene Frederick Wunschel of Lake View and 42-year-old John Eldon Wunschel of Wall Lake were handed down Monday. Both men pled guilty to lascivious acts with a child, a class C felony, and received the maximum penalty. The charges stem from a joint investigation conducted by the Lake View Police Department, Sac County Sheriff’s Office, MercyOne Child Advocacy Center in Sioux City, and Sac County Attorney’s Office. That investigation found Eugene and John Wunschel had committed sex acts against the juvenile victim between February 2020 and April 2021. As part of the plea agreement reached with prosecutors, charges of third-degree sexual abuse, a class A felony, were dismissed. This is the second time Eugene Wunschel has been convicted of sexual abuse. In 2006, he pled guilty to a separate third-degree sexual abuse charge out of Buena Vista County District Court but did not serve prison time. Instead, he was committed to a residential treatment facility for 180 days and sentenced to three years of probation. Both men must register with the Iowa Sex Offender registry for the remainder of their lives.
