Janet was born on August 25, 1921, along with her twin sister, Lynette, in Dedham, Iowa, the daughter of Mike and Catherine (Zitzlsperger) Schultes. She spent her younger years in the Dedham and Willey communities and attended St. Mary School in Willey and St. Angela Academy in Carroll.
In September of 1945, she was married to Leonard Snyder. The couple farmed near Ayrshire. While Janet was pregnant, her husband died in a farming accident. Janet gave birth to their son, Leonard, on March 1, 1948. Janet and her son lived in Willey with her parents for a short time before moving to their home on Main Street in Breda in 1954. Janet would reside in this home until 2018. She was an avid member of St. Bernard Parish. Janet enjoyed her family (especially watching her son play ball) and her friends (that she would routinely visit in nursing homes later in life). She also enjoyed going for walks and gambling. Janet had a fulfilling career at G.E., and also enjoyed her work as a nanny and at the Tea Room in Breda.
Survivors include her son Leonard Snyder and his wife Bonny (Tiefenthaler) of Panora, Iowa; four grandchildren Amy (Jerry) Hoover of Guthrie Center, IA, Katy (Quinn) Hildman of Waukee, IA, Abby (Brett Smith) Snyder of Waukee, Kelly (Nolan) Grimm of Waukee; 11 great grandchildren Genevieve, Jorja, and Jayla Hoover; Kyla and Kobe Hildman, Brady, Bo, and Andi Snyder-Smith; Rossi, Sage and Gianna Grimm; sister Loretta Hannasch of San Antonio, TX; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Schultes of Carroll; and many nieces and nephews. Her twin sister’s children, the Steinkamp family, were like her own, and we are grateful for their love and care throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter at birth, Mary Lee Snyder; sisters, Lavine Tigges, Louise Schultes, Mary Jo Schultes, Lynette Steinkamp, Alvera Irlbeck, Dorothy Bruening, Marilyn Pletchette; and brothers, Arthur and Leon Schultes.
We would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to St Anthony Nursing Home for their care of Janet the past five years.
