The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB), in collaboration with law enforcement agencies throughout Iowa, is intensifying its efforts to combat impaired driving and reduce traffic fatalities as the summer comes to a close. Last year, the state recorded 40 traffic fatalities during the final weeks of summer, with 30 percent of them attributed to alcohol or drugs. From Friday, August 18, to Monday, September 4, the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” high-visibility enforcement project will see agencies join forces to remove intoxicated drivers from the roads. With an emphasis on safety, officials encourage planning ahead to prevent tragedies. Options such as designated drivers, taxis, rideshare services, and community sober ride programs are available to ensure a safe journey. The campaign aims to foster a partnership between law enforcement and the community to eradicate this hazardous behavior.
