Construction Project Delays Start Of Classes For Audubon Community School District

Classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 23, for nearly all of the area schools, except for the Audubon Community School District. Superintendent Eric Trager says a construction project at the middle and high school building is running slightly behind schedule, forcing them to push back the first day of school.

Instead of Aug. 23, elementary students will now start the 2023-2024 school year on Monday, Aug. 28, while middle and high schoolers will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Teachers return this week for orientation and in-service training. Like many Iowa schools, filling open teacher positions has been difficult, and Trager says they are fortunate to be fully staffed heading into the new year.

With the start of classes delayed, school officials have also pushed back the open house dates for the district’s two attendance centers. The elementary open house will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the middle and high school open house is Thursday, Aug. 31, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. He says this is a great opportunity for students to acquaint themselves with their classrooms and schedules before their first day back. Trager says he and the Wheeler staff are looking forward to the new year, and he hopes students and parents are as excited as they are.
