The Jefferson Police Department is encouraging businesses to be on the lookout for a “short-change” artist after several local businesses reported losing several hundred dollars to the scammer. According to authorities, the Jefferson Hy-Vee lost $150 from an Aug. 12 incident, and the Jefferson Fareway lost $160 on Aug. 14 to the same suspect. A short-change scam occurs when a customer repeatedly exchanges large bills for smaller bills or pays for a small item with a significantly larger bill. The subtle transaction can confuse a cashier, leading them to hand over more cash than the suspect is owed. Individuals with information that could help identify this scammer are asked to contact the Greene County Law Enforcement Center by calling 515-386-2136.
