Regional Unemployment Dropped Slightly In July

Unemployment rates in the seven-county region improved marginally in July, according to data released earlier this week by Iowa Workforce Development. Audubon County led the area with the lowest unemployment at 2.2 percent, which matches the rates seen in the prior month and last year. Sac and Carroll Counties followed close behind at 2.3 percent. Sac’s figures were unchanged from June and improved by 0.2 percentage points from July 2022. Carroll’s rate dropped from 2.5 percent in June but remained 0.3 points above their July 2022 numbers. Greene County found itself in the middle of the pack at 2.8 percent, 0.2 points below June’s data but more than a half point higher than last year. Guthrie County improved by 0.1 points to 2.9 percent but held 0.2 points above July 2022. Calhoun County was 0.1 points higher than in June and 0.4 points higher than in July 2022 at 3.0 percent. Crawford County recorded the highest unemployment rate for the region at 4.5 percent, more than a whole percent higher than last year. Average unemployment for the seven counties measures 2.9 percent, compared to Iowa’s 2.7 percent unemployment and the nation’s 3.5 percent.
