The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education approved handbook revisions and the first reading of policy updates to grant staff additional sick leave and personal days. Under current policy, employees receive two days of personal leave and seven sick days per year. Superintendent Dr. Casey Berlau says the idea of adding the extra days was proposed during contract negotiations with Carroll Education Association (CEA) union representatives.

Berlau adds the Carroll Educational Support Association (CESA), which includes staff like teacher associates or bus drivers, requested a similar adjustment to their contracts. The board was amenable to the changes, but Berlau says the district insisted on including language on how personal days would be approved.

The same provision was included in the CESA handbook changes. Berlau says school officials want to provide these benefits to staff, but not at the expense of instructional time.

The board voted unanimously in favor of the employee handbook updates. They also approved the first readings of the necessary policy changes, which will be finalized in upcoming CCSD board meetings.
