Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has announced over $350,000 in grants through the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to support specialty crop producers. The grants, awarded in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and funded through the Farm Bill, are going to 11 projects to expand demand, innovation, and market reach for crops like grapes, apples, and Christmas trees. Naig says, “With the launch of the Choose Iowa program and the strong consumer demand for local foods, including Iowa-grown specialty crops, these grants will continue to build our state’s capacity to meet these growing markets. Specialty Crop Block Grants are an important component of the Farm Bill because they enhance the diversity of Iowa agriculture, build markets, invest in education, and assist with scientific research, all of which benefit consumers and growers in Iowa and beyond.” The Choose Iowa initiative and rising consumer interest in locally sourced foods are driving this investment outside the state’s traditionally dominant crops. Among the endeavors receiving grants are initiatives by Iowa State University, Practical Farmers of Iowa, Iowa Specialty Crop Producers Association, and others. Projects range from advancing crop cultivation strategies to enhancing food safety protocols, bolstering wine quality, nurturing specialty cut flower markets, and promoting school agriculture literacy.
