Candidate Filing Period Opens Today For Nov. 7 City/School Elections

Today (Monday) marks the first day that candidates in Iowa interested in running for the upcoming city/school elections on Nov. 7 can file their notice of intent to run with local election officials. In order to appear on the ballot for elected city positions, a potential candidate must return the affidavit of candidacy, which includes name, office sought, home address, and other required information, and a nominating petition with the required signatures by Thursday, Sept. 21. At least 75 signatures are needed in communities of 25,000 or greater, at least 50 signatures for cities between 7,500 and 24,999, 25 for towns between 2,500 and 7,499 and at least 10 signatures in communities of 2,499 or less. School candidates must file their affidavit of candidacy with the school secretary of the board they are running for. Their nomination petitions require at least 50 signatures or one percent of the registered voters in the district, whichever is less. The city/school elections will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
