The Iowa Department of Education has unveiled the spring 2023 assessment outcomes for the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP), encompassing grades 3 to 11. While the results exhibit modest advancement compared to the previous year, significant proficiency disparities remain among various student groups. The overall student proficiency levels remain relatively unchanged from last year. Notably, achievement gaps persist, primarily impacting English learners, students with disabilities, and those eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow says, “Together with educators and families, we will work to better serve students most in need of support and to accelerate learning so all students can succeed. This crucial data will guide the Department’s development of targeted solutions to improve student achievement statewide.” While English language arts demonstrated minimal growth, mathematics scores slightly improved across all grade levels. Proficiency gaps were stark, with students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, students with disabilities, and English learners lagging behind their peers by margins of 15, 41, and 45 percentage points, respectively. The ISASP assessment serves as a vital tool, aligning with state standards and aiding educators in identifying learning gaps. The comprehensive participation rate of 99 percent underscores the accuracy of the results, fostering a clearer understanding of student performance. Additional data from the spring 2023 ISASP tests are available below.
