A Carroll man convicted of child sexual abuse in Carroll County District Court will appeal his failed postconviction relief request to the Iowa Supreme Court. Seventy-nine-year-old Raymond John Miller pled guilty in May 2022 to second-degree sexual abuse, a class B felony, and was sentenced to up to 25 years in prison for sexual contact with multiple juvenile victims between 2007 and 2015. Miller attempted to appeal the sentence on claims of deception and ineffective assistance of trial counsel and mental and physical disabilities. Following an August hearing, a judge denied Miller’s request, saying his claims lacked supporting evidence suggesting his sentence should be changed. In less than a week, Miller submitted his notice of appeal. It is doubtful the Iowa Supreme Court will immediately take up Miller’s appeal, and it will likely be transferred to the Iowa Court of Appeals for a decision. Miller is currently serving his sentence at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. The earliest he could be eligible for release is in 2039 at the age of 96.
