In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to St. Croix Hospice (40 N. Main St., Denison, 51442). Like the river for which it is named, St. Croix Hospice caregivers helped Jim navigate the difficult parts of his end-of-life journey, with care and compassion. Donations help support diverse services such as the North Star Dementia Program.

Jim was born on December 20, 1933, to James A. and Frances L. (Koon) Vanderheiden. He was married to his high school sweetheart Annette Barnes on April 6, 1952. Carroll served as the hub of his working years that included Langes Dairy, Standard Oil Company, Terra Chemical, and Pella Windows. He and Annette also worked part-time at the Carroll Theater. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and a great neighbor, you could always count on Jim to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever one was needed. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, woodworking, and spending time with family. Jim will be remembered as possessing a rich baritone voice which he enjoyed sharing with The Carroll Community Chorus, Carroll Elks Men’s Chorus, and various church choirs. He was also a member of the Flexibles Quartet, performing at countless weddings and funerals, as well as many local nursing homes with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Jim’s singing voice was part of who he was.

James Vanderheiden is survived by his children: Teri and her husband Lieutenant Colonel Michael Salmons (USA, Retired); Rick; Joni and her husband Ed Tomka; Wolf Vander Heiden (Tony Vanderheiden) and his wife Lori; Maria and her husband, Todd Pankratz; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a brother-in-law Cyril Renze.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife and lifelong sweetheart, Annette; his sister Teresa Renze; grandson Christopher Salmons; and three granddaughters: Brittany Salmons, Liz Tomka, and Dani June Vanderheiden.
