Seven candidates have filed to appear on the Nov. 7 City/School election ballot for the three available seats on the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education. Jason Schagt of Carroll is one of those seven. Schagt is originally from Denison but relocated to Carroll in 1995 and has been here ever since. He works as a parts specialist for Haley Equipment. Schagt says his first involvement with CCSD was when the oldest of his five children first enrolled. It was then he started to become aware of areas he believed needed significant improvement.

Schagt adds he believes the district does a good job educating the typical student, but he feels the special education department could be doing a better job of helping kids on individualized education programs (IEPs) or 504 plans, which help students with disabilities. Schagt says he is also concerned that the school’s focus has drifted away from the fundamentals of education: reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Schagt is also hesitant to say he supports the instructional support levy (ISL) renewal. He says the focus should be on using existing funding more efficiently rather than collecting additional tax dollars.

Outside of his position at Haley Equipment, Schagt also runs his own business, building, modifying, and maintaining racecar engines. Schagt is scheduled to appear alongside the six other candidates at the Carroll County Growth Partnership candidate forum on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at CHS. Those candidates include Jill Johnston, Stacey McCaulley, Casie Forke-Burke, Jim Friel, Cindy Scaturico, and Sara Woerdehoff.
