A Graveside Memorial Service for 73-year-old, Ronald Schoneboom (pro: shone-boom — like past tense for shine) of Auburn will be held at 2pm on Saturday at the Luckow Cemetery in rural Auburn. Farber & Otteman Funeral Home of Lake View is in charge of the arrangements.

Ronald Schoneboom, age 73 of Auburn, IA, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Accura HealthCare of Lake City, IA, with family by his side. Ronald Lee Schoneboom was born on October 19, 1949, in Carroll, IA, to parents Eldo and LaVerna (Mohr) Schoneboom. He was baptized at the Lutheran Country Church in Ulmer, IA, and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View. Ron attended Lake View – Auburn School with the class of 1968.

During Ron’s lifetime he held different types of jobs from his early years at the Omaha Civic Center to being manager at Mars, Hardees, and Kentucky Fried Chicken, in Carroll, Ames, and Marshalltown, and then as a taxi driver in Ames. Ron, along with his brother Larry, ran their own business called R & L Electronics Sales & Service for several years. After that, Ron moved to Corpus Christi, TX, and continued what he loved best, cooking and serving people at an intercostal café. He later worked in sales and delivery for a beverage company in Yoakum, TX. During his time in Texas, Ron met his special friend of many years, Catherine (Kitty) Kendrick. Sadly in 2002, Kitty passed away. Ron moved back home that fall and went to work for Power Wash USA in Carroll for many years, retiring in 2021.

Ron enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, reading, discussing politics, and probably most of all enjoying a cold one with family and friends.

Of all the things Ron did in his lifetime, his family is sure he will be remembered as a simple man with a huge warm heart for sharing and caring for his family, his special friend Kitty, and his animals, especially his cat “Spuds”. Ron showed this type of care and compassion from a very young age. As a teenager he delivered extras from Thanksgiving dinner to shut-ins in Grant City and Ulmer and was always helping the elderly throughout his life. Most recently he was living with and helping his parents. His love, compassion, and selfless acts of kindness for family, friends, and life in general should be a lesson to all of us. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his parents Eldo and LaVerna (Mohr) Schoneboom of Auburn, IA; siblings: Brenda (Robert) Bengtson of West Des Moines, IA, Larry (Cheri) Shoneboom of Auburn, IA, Lori (Marty) Mauer of Lake View, IA, Reggie Schoneboom of Lake View, IA, Lisa (Jim) Garrels of Lake View, IA, and Tina (Rick) Reiter of Wall Lake, IA; nieces and nephews: Adam Bengtson, Ashley Bengtson, Jamie (Brenda) Schoneboom, Matthew Schoneboom, Nicci (Jason) Gruszeczka, Nick (Hayley) Mauer, Heidi (Wade) Handlos, Alyssa (Tarkha) Barbedo, Ryan Schoneboom, Bradley (fiancée Dreya) Garrels, Brian Garrels, and Josie (Dustin) Bengford; 14 great nieces and nephews; many other extended family members and friends.

Ron was preceded in death by his special friend Kitty Kendrick; paternal grandparents Gerkie and Erna Schoneboom; maternal grandparents George W. Mohr and Lillian Mohr-Buse; and step grandfather, Tony Buse.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the Luckow Cemetery in rural Auburn, IA, with Reverend Don E. Peterson III officiating. Farber & Otteman Funeral Home of Lake View has been entrusted to care for Ron and his family.
