Sen. Grassley Highlights Reagan’s ‘Time For Choosing’ Speech, Citing Similarities In Nation’s Challenges

Grassley-A-Time-for-Choosing

In a floor speech this week, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley commemorated the 59th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s iconic ‘A Time for Choosing’ speech. Grassley pointed out the similarities between the challenges faced by Americans in Reagan’s era and those of today, emphasizing that these issues should transcend party lines. Grassley referenced the partial progress made in addressing the ever-expanding national debt following the deal reached earlier this year to temporarily avoid a government shutdown. Grassley also cited the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 deficit as a significant concern, exceeding $2 trillion. The historical deficit was further aggravated by rising interest payments on the debt, which amounted to $711 billion and is projected to consume an increasingly larger portion of the federal budget. Looking ahead, Senator Grassley emphasized that the nation must address the impending fiscal cliff due to an aging population and the solvency issues of Social Security and Medicare. He drew parallels with the successful actions taken by Reagan and then-Democratic Leader Tipp O’Neill in 1983 to secure Social Security’s future, including a plan to incrementally increase the retirement age over the next four decades. Grassley called for responsible budget and appropriations practices to manage government activity and prevent the burgeoning fiscal crisis. Video from Grassley’s floor speech is included below.
