Iowa HHS Records First Flu Death of 2023-24 Season

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has reported the state’s first influenza-related death for the 2023-24 respiratory virus season. The victim, an older adult between 61 and 80 years old, was from southern Iowa. While the state’s most recent Respiratory Virus Surveillance Report indicates low activity levels for the flu, it is a reminder for Iowans to take precautions to safeguard their health and that of their communities during the respiratory virus season. Vaccination is a crucial step in protecting against serious illness and death, particularly for those with chronic health conditions who may be at higher risk. Additional tips to stay healthy include staying home when sick, frequent hand washing, coughing and sneezing etiquette, avoiding social gatherings when ill, and keeping sick children home from daycare or school. For medical concerns, Iowans are advised to contact their healthcare provider, who can offer guidance on in-person evaluations and testing for respiratory diseases. Questions about vaccinations can be addressed by healthcare providers or online at www.vaccines.gov.
