The Iowa Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed yesterday (Tuesday) another outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a Buena Vista County commercial turkey flock. This latest outbreak marks the fourth in Iowa over the past 12 days. According to APHIS data, more than 100,000 birds have been affected in these first few cases, and that number is likely to rise as the wild bird migration continues. Commercial and backyard flock owners should prevent contact between their birds and wild birds whenever possible. Sick birds or unusual deaths among avians should be immediately reported to state or federal officials. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes the recent HPAI detections in birds do not present a public health concern.
