An Illinois man died Saturday while waterfowl hunting in Guthrie County. Twenty-six-year-old Seth Egelhoff of Chesterfield, Ill., lost his life in a fatal hunting accident. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is currently investigating the incident, which occurred during a waterfowl hunting excursion at the Bays Branch Wildlife Area. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call at approximately 1 p.m., reporting that a hunter had sustained a gunshot wound to the face. Guthrie County Emergency Medical Services transported Egelhoff, applying lifesaving measures en route to an air ambulance. However, Egelhoff was pronounced deceased shortly after departing the scene. The Iowa DNR Law Enforcement Bureau is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, Panora EMS, and the Iowa State Patrol are also assisting in the investigation. The Bays Branch Wildlife Area, where the incident occurred, remains open for public use. Saturday’s incident marks the second fatal hunting accident in Iowa this fall. A coyote hunter in Hardin County was shot and killed nearly a month ago.
