As the Christmas shopping season nears its climatic end, a recent report from personal finance company WalletHub shows Iowans have the fewest credit cards per capita compared to the rest of the county, and it is not a close comparison. Researchers studied just a few factors to determine their rankings: average number of credit cards owned in the third quarter of 2023, average number of new credit cards opened in the same period, and the percent change in both metrics from the previous year. According to WalletHub’s data, Iowans, on average, owned 4.28 credit cards per person, and only opened 1.14 new accounts in Q3 2023. Compared to a year ago, Iowans held 7.13 percent fewer cards and opened 0.74 percent fewer accounts than in Q3 2022. WalletHub gave Iowa a total score of 6.18, more than three times the second-lowest-ranked state, Nebraska, which has 19.31 points. Alaska ranked as the state with the most credit cards, followed by New Jersey and Nevada.
