Mary Lou Stevens of Templeton

Mary Lou Stevens, age 77, of Templeton, IA, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by her family.

A public viewing and visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Friday, December 22, 2023.  Casket bearers will be her sons and grandsons.

A private graveside service will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for a later designation.

Mary Lou was born on October 18, 1946 in Carroll, IA, and she was the daughter of Roy and Luella (Brandenburg) Hagedorn.  She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Audubon.  Mary Lou attended country school through the third grade and graduated from Audubon High School in 1965.  On July 3, 1965, she was married to Eugene Alt.  They had two sons: Scott and Tony.  On February 21, 2004 she was remarried to John Stevens.  Mary Lou and John made their home in Templeton until the time of her death.  She had many jobs over the years from school bus driver to bowling alley waitress, and she served on the Templeton City Council for many years.  Mary Lou was Vice President and Bookkeeper for Stevens Ag LLC and even drove farm equipment from field to field when help was short.  She retired from the Templeton Telephone Company in 2011.  She enjoyed playing cards, time with the girls, fishing, boating, attending grandchildren’s sporting events, 4-H livestock shows, going to the casino, and most of all spending the holidays with her family.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband John Stevens of Templeton; her two sons: Scott Alt (Mindy) of Audubon and Tony Alt of Redfield; her grandchildren: Garret Alt (Lauren) of Ankeny, Cooper and Kinsey Alt of Redfield, and Aiden and Evan Alt of Audubon; a great-grandson Keaton of Ankeny; her sister Judy Schleisman (Mike) of Lake City; her in-laws: Bob Stevens (Darlene) of Yuma, AZ, Connie Riesselman (Mike) of Willey, IA, JoAnn Klocke (Mike) of Coon Rapids, Sherry Zaruba of Waukee, Susan Frank (Steve) of Hernando, MS, Kay Stevens of Carroll, and Arnold Haynes of Hankock, IA;  and many nieces and nephews and other extended family members.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Luella Hagedorn; a sister Sue McCarty; a grandson Austin Alt; a sister-in-law Kathy Haynes; and a brother-in-law Jim Stevens.
