Mary Schelle, age 95 of Cedar Falls, formerly of Glidden, passed away on January 1, 2024 at New Aldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M . on Saturday, January 6, 2023 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Fr. Patrick Behm as Celebrant. Music for the service will be by Mary Ross and the St. Elizabeth Seton Choir. Lector for the Mass will be Brandie Davidson. Gift bearers will be Jane Espenhover and Judy Tiefenthaler. Casket bearers will be Ernie Tiefenthaler, Jim Gaul, Nik McCallum, Joe Espenhover, Mike Schelle, and Duane Kaufman. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Breda.
Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden from 5 – 7 P.M. where there will be a Christian Wake Service held at 7 P.M. The casket will be moved to St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M.

Mary was born on May 27, 1928 in Tilden, NE, to Louis and Evelyn (Graves) Schmid. She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Earling, Iowa in 1947. She worked as a housekeeper for many families until she got married. She married Nyle Schelle on August 9, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Nyle and Mary farmed near Earling and then moved to a farm near Breda, Iowa where they farmed until 1977. In 1977, they moved to Glidden. Mary was a housewife and helped Nyle farm for many years. She worked at General Electric in Carroll retiring in 1990. She then attended Des Moines Area Community College and received a diploma in 1990. Mary enjoyed many hobbies. She loved to sew, and made beautiful quilts. She enjoyed gardening and canning the produce from her garden. She loved flowers and plants and had a green thumb. She was a wonderful baker and made many a pie and fresh bread and cinnamon rolls. Mary and Nyle enjoyed dancing. They were members of the P.O.L.K. of A. Polka Club and would travel around the Midwest dancing. They would also dance at area nursing homes. Mary was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda and then St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic church in Glidden where she taught catechism. She was a member of the Catholic Youth Organization. In 2018, Mary moved to an assisted living facility near her daughter in Cedar Falls and later into the Memory Care Unit at New Aldaya.
Mary is survived by her children, Jeanine LaBreck of Colton, SD, Gerry Schelle of Storm Lake, IA and Laurie (Curt) McCallum of Cedar Falls, IA, a granddaughter Brandie Davidson of Ft. Worth, TX, a grandson, Nikolaus (Sheila) McCallum of Waterloo, IA, a great grandson Draven, sister Ramona Kaufman of Des Moines, IA, a brother-in-law Ron Schelle (Pat) of Pfafftown, NC and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Nyle, brothers, Joseph and Jerome and sisters Angela and Regina.
