Bernard Luke “Bernie” Janning, age 86, of Carroll, died Saturday, January 6, 2024 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 13, 2024 at St. Lawrence Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Patrick Behm. Music will be by Kathy Halbur and Cassidy Halbur. Lectors will be Brandi Strohmeyer and Brianna Hanson. Gift Bearers will be Emmie Janning, Ryan Fitch, and Presley Fitch. Casket Bearers will be James Lach, Luke Janning, Jerome Remm, Jordan Remm, Eric Douglas, Joe Hanson, and Taylor Hanson. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery in West Point, Nebraska.
THERE WILL BE NO VISITATION TONIGHT -FRIDAY 1/12/24 due to weather. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church on Saturday where additional visitation will be from 8:30am until the time of the funeral mass. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for a later designation.

Born on September 11, 1937, in Carroll, Iowa, Bernard Juke Janning was the son of John B. and Theodora R. (Schoeppner) Janning. Bernie attended school in Mt. Carmel and later graduated from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School. After completing his education, Bernie made a living doing Terrazzo and Tile, eventually owning his own business from which he retired in 2010. Retirement didn’t keep him away from the shop he loved and committed his life to, he was there every day to keep a watchful eye to be sure that things were getting done and “correctly”. The man just couldn’t give up the work he loved and couldn’t keep himself from staying busy all the time. He was a member of St Lawrence parish and was very passionate about his faith. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus for many years as well as Pheasant Forever.
He was married to Arlene (Surman) Remm, and they made their home north of Carroll where he resided until his death. Bernie thoroughly loved all things hunting and fishing; whether it be casting the line or shooting the gun himself or telling his or someone else’s story about fishing/hunting trips (and he went on many), he was also an avid collector of fishing lures and reels and made various displays to showcase them using his woodworking skills, which he also used to craft many wooden cutting boards that he took great pride in making and gifting to many of his friends and family. The man was always busy working or tinkering with his hands. He liked spending some of his Saturdays going to auctions to buy “things he couldn’t live without.” He also enjoyed watching and talking sports and was very educated about them, he was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Creighton Blue Jays. If the weather was nice (and sometimes not) he could be spotted on the front porch watching the traffic and by the sound of the horns going by most people knew to glance over and see if he was out. He loved having visitors and especially enjoyed his daily hugs from his granddaughter Emmie.
Left to cherish his memory are 3 children; Sheila Walker of St Petersburg, FL, Kreg (Katherine) Janning of Appomattox, VA and Darrin (Sheila) Janning of Carroll, 3 stepchildren; Gerry (Brenda) Remm of Arlington, NE, Lou Ann (Rick) Carter of Lincoln, NE and Donna (Darin) Hanson of Lincoln, NE; his sister Lois (Dan) Mein of Leavenworth, KS; sisters-in-law: Mary Lou Janning of Carroll, Diane Janning of Glidden and Julia Janning of Glidden; 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, more extended family and countless friends.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Arlene; sons Bernard Troy and Kevin; stepson Ronald Remm; granddaughter Allia Janning; his sisters Dorothy (Art) Becker and Louise (Darol) Grossman; his brothers: John (Mary Ann) Janning, Lawrence (Jean) Janning, Jerome Janning, Kenny (June) Janning, Lowell Janning, and Ernest Janning, his sisters-in-law Deloris Wortman and Kathleen Bunn; his brothers-in-law Norbert Surman and Wilfred Surman.
