Keep Pipes From Freezing This Weekend During The Extremely Cold Temperatures

With the wind chill watch in effect for this weekend and the temperatures not getting above zero degrees for a high, pipes are susceptible to freezing. When pipes freeze, cracks can form costing homeowners thousands of dollars in repairs due to flooding. People are encouraged to follow some simple tips from State Farm Insurance to help prevent this from happening. It’s recommended to adjust the thermostat, keeping the same temperature throughout the day and night above at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This will help reduce any strain on the furnace during extreme cold weather and keep heat to the pipes. Open any cabinet doors with exposed pipes, like under sinks or by exterior walls, allowing for heat to circulate around any plumbing. Turn on the cold water from any faucet that runs from exposed pipes, letting it drip overnight. Even the smallest amount of water running through the pipes will prevent freezing. If taking all the precautionary steps, and the pipes do end up freezing, make sure to shut off the water supply to the house. Use a hair dryer to melt any ice that is on the pipes, starting closest to the faucet, and avoid using a torch or other open flames that can cause a potential fire hazard. Once the ice is melted, slowly turn the water back on and check for leaks frequently. Call a licensed plumber if additional assistance is needed. While these tips are not a guarantee, they will help in preventing possible damage and eliminate additional stress on homeowners during the cold winter weather.
