Guthrie Center Bicyclist Killed After Being Struck By Truck Wednesday

A Guthrie Center man was killed yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon after he was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 5:38 p.m. on Highway 44 east of Bluff Street on the east side of Guthrie Center. The initial investigation found a 2013 Ford F150, operated by 83-year-old Francis Junior Flanery of Panora, was traveling westbound on Highway 44 and collided with a bicycle ridden by 69-year-old Wayne Wesley Hayes of Guthrie Center. Authorities say Hayes was riding in the traveled portion of the roadway when the Flanery truck struck him. Hayes was transported to Guthrie County Hospital by Guthrie County Emergency Medical Services for treatment but later died due to his injuries. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene. An investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
