Tony was born on October 17, 1924 to Anthony and Amelia (Holdgrafer) Stalzer on their farm outside of Haverhill, IA. He had seven brothers and four sisters. Tony met the love of his life, Eleanor Maxine Raeder, and they were married on June 25, 1945. Tony and Eleanor were blessed with four children and later nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great- great- grandchild. Tony worked at Wiemer’s Farm Implement in Melbourne and later for International Harvester. The family moved to Carroll in 1963. IH was sold to Reuters and Tony continued there as Service Manager until he retired in 1985.
In his younger years, Tony enjoyed playing baseball, bowling, fishing and singing. At about 40 years of age, he developed a passion for golfing and played often until age 92. He once gave CPR to another golfer on the course and saved his life. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and Minnesota with his fishing boat and spent time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever possible.
After his wife, Eleanor, passed in 1982, Tony joined the Holy Spirit church choir and was a faithful member singing at Sunday mass and funeral services for many years. He also joined the singing group RSVP and enjoyed going to the nursing homes to “sing to the old people” who were younger than he was.
Tony married Elayne Montgomery Busche in May of 1984. Elayne passed away in December 2009.
Tony will be remembered for his love of golf, his easy-going nature and for always telling his loved ones to “keep smiling.”
Tony is survived by his four children; James (Carol) Stalzer of Sioux Falls, SD, Darrell (Sue) Stalzer of Muscatine, IA, Becky (Steve) Welch of Omaha, NE, and Julie Stalzer of Omaha NE and his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild.
Tony is preceded in death by his seven brothers, four sisters and his grandson David Stalzer.
