AG Bird Outlines Top Consumer Complaints Of 2023

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird has released a list of the top ten consumer complaints of 2023, showcasing the state’s battle against scams. With over 3,700 complaints across 30 industries, Bird emphasized the office’s commitment to safeguarding Iowans from scams. She says, “In today’s digital age, some of the biggest threats Iowans face appear in the palm of their hand or because of a simple act of misplaced trust. Scammers are manipulative, and they will exploit our good faith and emotions to get what they want. But we won’t let them get away with it. As your allies in the Attorney General’s office, we are fighting to hold scammers accountable and equip Iowans with the knowledge to stay safe.” The leading consumer complaints in 2023 included automobiles with 637 complaints, internet scams with 341 complaints, home improvement contract failures with 336 complaints, and imposter scams with 244 complaints. Rounding out the top ten were home goods and services, personal services, healthcare, fraudulent credit card charges, and housing and realty. A “miscellaneous” category, ranging from employment issues to personal disputes, took the tenth spot. Individuals can contact 515-281-5926 to report potential scams or file a complaint on the official website.
