Spring Is Just A Few Week Away, But DNR Encourages Patience For Paddlers Until Water Warms

With spring and warmer weather just around the corner, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds paddlers anxious to get out their kayaks and canoes of the still dangerously cold water temperatures. The DNR advises paddlers to await consistently warm weather to allow for a gradual rise in water temperatures, emphasizing that the current conditions pose risks of cold water shock and hypothermia. Iowa DNR River Programs Water Trails Coordinator Todd Robertson says, “We have not had enough consistently warm days to raise water temperatures adequately. Cold water shock and hypothermia can set in quickly if you fall into the water at current temperatures.” The DNR recommends safety measures for paddlers, including wearing a life jacket for buoyancy and warmth, paddling in groups with experienced members, informing someone about the paddling plans, dressing appropriately for water temperature, carrying a dry bag with extra clothing, and avoiding hazards like strainers and wood piles in the water.
