James “Jim” Genter of Glidden

James “Jim” Roger Genter, age 78, of Glidden, IA, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024 surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the First United Methodist Church in Glidden with Rev. Ben Carter-Allen officiating. Music for the service will be by Mary Ross and Rick Tegeler. Casket bearers will be John Ealy, Rick Whitaker, Jeff Venteicher, Dave Richardson, Alex Wright and Kyle Thompson. Honorary Casket bearers will be Jim’s sons; Mike Genter, Henrik Nielsen, Mike Moller, Rick Tegeler, Scott Hill and Trent Hill. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden with Military Honors by the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion.

Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday. The casket will be moved to the First United Methodist Church at 9:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. prior to the service.

Memorials are suggested to Omaha Fisher House, which serves as a “home away from home” for veterans receiving medical treatment. Jim & Janet resided at the Omaha Fisher House during their medical stay in Omaha. Memorials may be left with the funeral home or at the church.

Jim was born on June 9th, 1945 to Robert and Letha Genter. Jim was a lifelong resident of Glidden, Ia. He attended Glidden Ralston Community School where he received his high school diploma in 1963. He attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1968 with a degree in Farm Operations. He was a member of the Theta Chi fraternal organization.

Jim’s legacy is his service to his family, faith, community and country. Jim enlisted in the United States Army in 1968 and served his country in the Vietnam War until 1971. He returned with his family to Iowa following his military service to farm alongside his parents. In 1985, Jim would move his family to the farm that has been owned by the Genter’s since 1919 and was recently awarded century farm status. Jim was an active member of the Merle Hay American Legion Post #386. He served as commander of the Color Guard for more than 12 years. Jim’s community service also includes several terms on the Glidden Ralston Community School Board of Education. He held the position of President of the Board and proudly presented his daughter her High School diploma in 1989. Jim succeeded his father on the Glidden Mutual Insurance Board and their cumulative service equaled more than 60 years. Jim was a lifelong member of Glidden United Methodist Church and was active in nearly every leadership role. He played an instrumental role in building the new church in 1995 where the belltower at the entrance is dedicated to his father. Jim was active on the Farmers Cooperative board and was involved with the Jaycees organization for many years. Jim enjoyed his retirement from farming by spending his summers at his Minnesota lake house, along with many hobbies enjoyed at home. He restored antique tractors and participated in tractor rides and parades across the Midwest. He also collected scale model tractors that lined his farm office shelves, as well as vintage model trains and tracks constructed using metal erector sets collected from childhood. In junior high, Jim began choir singing, which he enjoyed through his life in community and church choirs and the Manning Liederkranz Choir.

Jim Genter is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Letha Genter; his brother, Ronald Genter; his daughter, Dawn Genter; and his grandson, Alec Steffes.

Jim’s memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family: his wife Janet; his children, Mike (Linda) Genter, Bobbi (Henrik) Nielsen, Tammi (Mike) Moller, and Valerie (Rick) Tegeler; his grandchildren, Ethan Genter, Evan Genter, Garrett Genter, Lily Genter, Cole Genter, AJ Busch, Devan Allison, Brittany Steffes, Tyler Lane, Grace Ekness, Antonia Tegeler, Anamarie Tegeler, Robert Genter, Michael Ashby, and Shannon Hill; his stepchildren, Scott (Roxanne) Hill and Trent Hill; great-grandchildren, Emerson Genter, Adelynn Genter, Elsa Steffes, Nora Schubert, Joseph Lane, Remy Lane, Elowen Lane, Isaiah Steffes, Uma Ekness, and Judah Genter; sister Patricia Steigerwalt; and Joy Stuhr, mother of their children.
