Iowa Democrats Back Biden As Party’s 2024 Presidential Nominee

President Joe Biden got the nod from Iowa Democrats to be the party’s 2024 nominee, with over 90 percent of voters selecting him as their top choice in the mail-in presidential preference card results. The unofficial results from the Iowa Democratic Party show Biden received 11,083 votes from the 12,207 participants statewide. “Uncommitted” saw the second highest vote tally with 480, followed by Minnesota Representative Dean Phillips with 362 votes and Texas Author Marianne Williamson with 268 votes. The Iowa Democratic Party’s (IDP) nominating process was a departure from years past, as they did not host in-person caucuses after being tossed from their first-in-the-nation status by the Democratic National Committee. Instead, party members submitted presidential preference cards by mail and then released the results on Super Tuesday. IDP Chair Rita Hart says they met their turnout goal. Only 2.6 percent of registered Democrats in Iowa submitted presidential preference cards, according to March voter registration data from the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office. Approximately 17.9 percent of registered Iowa Republicans participated in the GOP’s traditional caucuses in January. Results are unofficial until certified by the IDP Central Committee on March 16.
