Marie Johanna Ertz, age 101, of Glidden, IA, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Journey Senior Services in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Fr. Joe Dillinger as Celebrant. Music for the Mass will be by the St. Elizabeth Seton Choir with Mary Ross as organist and Mike Bolton as soloist. Eucharistic Minister will be Judy Mayer. Lectors for the Mass will be Joy Esterbrooks and Jeanine Kurth. Gift bearers will be Dave and Dean Ertz. Casket bearers will be Paul Daniel, Alan Daniel, Ryan Ertz, Chris Esterbrooks, Tony Esterbrooks, and Emmanuel Vela. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
A Rosary will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden at 5:00 P.M. on Friday followed by visitation from 5:30 – 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to St. Elizabeth Seton Church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. prior to the Mass.

Marie was born on July 28, 1922 on her family’s farm near Roselle, IA, and she was the daughter of Anton “Tony” and Frances (Muhlbauer) Irlmeier. She grew up on the farm and attended Holy Angels Catholic School through the 8th grade. Marie worked for several local families helping with housekeeping and children. She was married to Raymond Ertz on August 19, 1943 at Holy Angels Church in Roselle. The couple made their home in Maple River for a short time before moving to Glidden where they raised their family. Ray worked for Glidden REC and Marie was a homemaker. After her children were raised she worked for Boomsma Egg Plant in Glidden and she did volunteer work at the New Hope Village Store. She was an active member of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish where she served on the funeral luncheon committee and the church guild. She enjoyed reading, going to the Glidden Library, going for walks, gardening, knitting, playing Kings Corners, and baking her famous chocolate chip cookies. Marie and Ray loved to Polka dance and they were the Polka King and Queen of the Polka Club of Iowa.
Marie is survived by her four children and their families: Jeanine Kurth of Lake View, Dave Ertz of Estherville, Joy Esterbrooks (Dennis) of Omaha, and Dean Ertz (Laura) of Boone; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and one great great-granddaughter; a sister Florence Thelen of Atlantic, and several nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Ray in 2007; her parents Anton “Tony” and Frances Irlmeier; and two sisters: Cecelia Nepple and her husband Herbert and Lorene Nepple her husband Norbert; and a brother-in-law Gerald Thelen.
