Region XII Council of Governments is inviting city officials to the next lunch and learn workshop, in discussing the best practices when implementing a nuisance abatement. Chapter 657 in Iowa Code allows for cities to define, identify, and create a resolution to mitigate or remove the nuisance that could be negatively impacting the health and safety of city residents, lower community pride standards and decreasing property value. Many Iowa cities are moving toward implementing nuisance abatement, and this program will assist city officials understand the process and how to best carry out its established procedures. Mickey Shields from the Iowa League of Cities will be presenting on the city’s role, how to effectively plan and budget for a nuisance abatement, the administrative process of an infraction, and how to handle serious property issues such as tax sales for the abandoned properties.
