On the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Main Street in Coon Rapids, there will be a traffic study conducted to determine whether the proposed curb extensions will make it in the streetscaping plan. For the next two weeks, the temporary curb extensions, represented by traffic cones, will allow for local traffic to test the new proposed changes, and discuss the findings of the study at a town hall meeting on Wednesday, April 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the city council chambers. The purpose behind the proposed bump-outs is to maintain pedestrian safety by reducing the distance for crossing the street, assisting with slowing down traffic, and for accessibility, as often bump-outs include curb ramps. In addition to the bump-outs, ISG Engineering also recommended widening the sidewalk to make each driving lane fourteen feet to accommodate accessibility, pedestrian safety, and enhanced walkability, amenities like trees, additional lighting, and street furniture, as well as boosting economic benefits as wider sidewalks have been shown to increase foot traffic for business and restaurants in commercial areas. Anyone with questions can contact Community Coordinator Katie Mason, City Clerk Jes Leighty, or any streetscaping committee members.
