The Lake City Council Members approved a service agreement for a Flow Monitoring Project, which is the first phase of a multi-step project that will lead to the construction of a water treatment facility for the city. The city has been mandated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to update the current city’s lagoon system to protect an endangered Topeka Shiner by improving the quality of wastewater released. City Administrator Jacob Matthews says that while the mandate has been in place for many years, the city is now ready to start the process.
The service agreement is with MSA Professional Services out of Ankeny. The group will monitor the quantity of the wastewater flow and record the levels of ammonia nitrate in the water. Matthews says this project is expected to be completed in 2028 or 2029.
Matthews says the wastewater treatment facility is looking to be the biggest and most expensive project for the city in the last ten years. The estimated cost for completing the entire project is just over eight million dollars.
