A Carroll woman convicted of felony theft and forgery has been sentenced to up to five years in prison. According to Carroll County District Court records, 34-year-old Stephanie Jean Winter was initially charged with second-degree theft and six counts of forgery, class D felonies, and third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor, for knowingly writing at least a half-dozen checks from a closed account to area businesses, combined for more than $1,500 total losses. Winter pleaded guilty to the felony theft charge and two forgery counts as part of an agreement with prosecutors, and the court dismissed the remaining charges. A judge sentenced Winter to five years on each count to be served concurrently. Additionally, her probation, stemming from a September 2023 conviction for assault while displaying a dangerous weapon was revoked, and the two-year sentence was enforced. On June 18, 2023, Winter used a vehicle to intentionally strike a man in the 700 block of Granada Road in Carroll. That sentence will also run concurrent to the other penalties imposed.
