A Mechanicsville man arrested for allegedly brandishing a knife during a fight at a Carroll convenience store earlier this year received a two-year suspended sentence. According to Carroll County District Court records, 47-year-old Gene Edward Wegg received his sentence last week after pleading guilty to one count of assault while using a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor. That charge stems from a Jan. 26 incident at the Carroll Casey’s in the 600 block of U.S. Highway 30. Wegg brandished a knife during an argument in the store’s parking lot and used the blade to strike the victim in the head, resulting in bodily injury. Wegg and two other individuals involved in the fight were transported to St. Anthony Regional Hospital for treatment following the exchange. According to Wegg’s sentencing order, a two-year prison was suspended, and he will instead be placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Corrections for two years. He was also ordered to pay over $2,000 in fines, surcharges, victim restitution, and court costs.
