DNR Recommends Iowans Begin Spring/Summer Pond Maintenance Planning

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says it is time for pond owners in Iowa to start planning their strategies for controlling aquatic plants to maintain a healthy balance in their ponds. While aquatic plants are essential for a pond’s ecosystem, overgrowth can limit its usability and disrupt fish populations. According to DNR staff, pond owners should consider both mechanical and chemical control methods to manage plant growth effectively. These practices are most effective when initiated early in the season before plant growth peaks. Mechanical methods, such as bottom blanketing, shading, and removal, can help limit plant growth in high-use areas of the pond. Additionally, applying pond dye in April can reduce the amount of light necessary for plant growth. For chemical control, pond owners should carefully follow instructions and consider reapplication throughout the summer for season-long effectiveness. It’s crucial to identify the target plant species, measure the treatment area, and adhere to label directions to minimize potential harm to water quality and aquatic life. For more information and guidance on managing aquatic plants in ponds, pond owners can visit the Iowa DNR website at www.iowadnr.gov/ponds.
