Waspy’s Truck Wash, LLC in Audubon County has been ordered to pay an $8,000 administrative penalty from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for excessive discharges into the City of Audubon’s wastewater treatment facility. According to the DNR, Waspy’s violated the limits on its treatment agreement at least 529 times between Sept. 1, 2019 and March 11, 2024 due to the high number of livestock trailer interiors cleaned at their site on Highway 71 south of Audubon. The existing agreement limits total suspended solids, ammonia, nitrogen, oil, and grease, among other pollutants. In a settlement issued on May 1, Waspy’s Truck Wash agreed to submit a plan of action within 30 days of the order to comply with the existing treatment agreement or submit a new proposal for consideration. The DNR ordered Waspy’s to pay $3,000 for economic benefits received through its noncompliance, $3,000 due to the gravity of the violations, and $2,000 for its culpability.
