A Kimballton resident was honored during the 59th Annual Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) meeting, being awarded the Community Leader Award. Former Mayor Peggy Mortensen was one of four members recognized for their years of service to their communities and public power systems. Mortensen has served on Kimballton’s City Council since 1999 in many different positions, including mayor pro term and as mayor. During his presentation, MRES Board Chair Vernell Roberts stated that Mortensen has been a driving force in advancing the city’s electrical system to modern standards. Roberts says, “She’s also written articles for the local paper about the past, present, and future of the Kimballton electric system and has attended multiple MRES events, including the Municipal Power Leadership Academy, annual meetings, area meetings, and policymaker dinners. It’s very important to recognize that many people like Peggy serve in community leadership positions throughout the MRES membership. They each do it for the benefit of the communities in which they live, and their selfless contributions are very deserving of this award.” MRES is an organization of 61 municipalities in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota; this year marks the 21st year of the Community Leader Award.
