Verl Wurr of Manning

Verl Duane Wurr, age 90, of Manning, IA, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2024 at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, May 17, 2024 at Sacred Heart Church in Manning with Fr. Michael Cronin as Celebrant. Casket bearers will be Tyler Wurr, Teresa Bach, Roger Bach, Tara Odendahl, and Tonya Jones. Honorary casket bearers will be Robert Wurr, Ryan Jones, Nicole McCann, Alan McCann, Brooke Wurr, Steve Odendahl, Austin Plante, and Trista Plante. Music will be by Anne Muhlbauer and the Sacred Heart Manning Choir. The lector will be Tonya Jones. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manning.

Visitation will be held Friday morning from 9:30 – 10:15 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church.

Verl, the son of Adolph and Dorothy (Onken) Wurr, was born on April 21, 1934 near Lidderdale in Carroll County, IA. He grew up on a farm northwest of Lidderdale and attended country school through the eighth grade. He then worked on the family farm.

On July 2, 1953, Verl was united in marriage with Virgine Fendrich at the Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. Five sons were born to this union. The family made their home in Manning. Verl worked for the Manning Municipal Light Company until his retirement. Verl enjoyed boating, camping, fishing, and teaching the grandchildren to water ski. Verl and Virgine enjoyed dancing together, particularly the polka.

Verl is survived by four sons: Thomas Wurr and wife Teresa “Nook” of Colorado Springs, Colorado; James Wurr and wife Cindy of Ankeny, Iowa; Donald Wurr of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Robert Wurr of Defiance, Iowa; nine grandchildren; Nicole McCann and husband Alan; Tonya Jones and husband Ryan; Tara Odendahl and husband Steve; Teresa Bach and husband Roger; Trista Plante and husband Austin; Tyler Wurr and wife Brooke; Melissa Johnson; Jessica Allen and husband David; seven great-grandsons: Alister McCann, Ryker Odendahl, Landon and Kellan Jones, Braxton and Brevyn Bach, Kyler and Camden Johnson; four great-granddaughters: Priya, Harper, and Haven Odendahl, Teresa Braylee Bach, Remington Allen; brother Larry (Sharon) Wurr and by other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Virgine Wurr; parents; son David Wurr; daughter-in-law Denice Wurr; siblings: Ivan (Joyce) Wurr, Darwin (Marie) Wurr, Shirley (Albert) Wenck, Donna (Kenneth) Wright; and two brother-in-laws, LaVern Fendrich and Raymond Fendrich in infancy.
