During National Police Week, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced a bipartisan bill co-led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to address staffing shortages in law enforcement agencies. The Retired Law Enforcement Officers Continuing Service Act, initially introduced by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), proposes financial support to departments and access to a pool of retired officers for investigations, analysis, and training of new recruits. Grassley says, “Criminal trends threaten Americans’ peace and safety and strain law enforcement resources. Iowa law enforcement tells me they’re particularly struggling with recruitment and retention. Retired officers willing to continue serving should have our support. I’m glad to see this commonsense measure move forward.” Grassley also joined over 70 bipartisan senators in a resolution honoring law enforcement officers, including two fallen Iowa officers, Kevin Cram and Phoukham Tran. Another version of Grassley’s Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act, a bill to prevent ambush-style attacks on officers, passed the U.S. House of Representatives.
