The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office welcomed its newest deputy, Nick Johnson, to the team last week. Johnson is a Carroll County native, graduating in 2010 from Carroll High School. He currently lives in Lidderdale with his wife and three kids. Johnson says he has known for a long time that he wants to be a first responder and has worked in the field for several years, including as a Carroll County jailer, with local EMS departments, and for the last three years with the Jefferson Police Department.

Johnson attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 2021 and, before that, earned his emergency medical technician (EMT) certification from the Mercy College EMT Program. Johnson was officially sworn in as a Carroll County deputy on Thursday, May 16. He says the responsibilities of a deputy differ from those of a city police officer, and his first days with the sheriff’s office have been spent familiarizing himself with the job duties.

In recent years, law enforcement agencies have faced challenges filling openings. Sheriff Ken Pingrey says they were fortunate to find somebody from the county with ILEA certification.

Johnson is still undergoing the onboarding and training process and is working the 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift for the time being. While he is from Carroll County, he says there are still plenty of people he’s looking forward to meeting.
