Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags across the state to be flown at half-staff tomorrow (Thursday) in honor of an Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) worker killed last week. Matthew Dickerson was working on I-80 near Council Bluffs on May 16 when he was struck by a semi-truck while shoveling asphalt in the left traffic lane. Reynolds says “We honor the memory of Matthew Dickerson and his service to the state of Iowa as he is laid to rest this week. Kevin and I pray for his wife, daughters, parents, and extended family during this difficult time. This senseless tragedy never should have happened. I urge all drivers to be alert when approaching any work area at any time. The workers on our interstates and roadways deserve our full attention and respect. Pleas be vigilant and reduce your speed whenever you’re near work areas to keep everyone safe on Iowa’s roads.” Flags will be flown at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on the flag displays in the Capitol Complex, as well as public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state from sunrise to sunset. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect. The Iowa State Patrol is currently investigating the crash and any pending charges will be filed with the Pottawattamie County Attorney.
