Gas prices in the state trended higher as Iowans prepare to hit the road for the Memorial Day holiday weekend. As of Wednesday, May 22, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.30 per gallon, up six cents on the week but still 10 cents below prices from a year ago. The national average on Wednesday was unchanged from $3.61 per gallon. Retail diesel prices fell six cents to a statewide average of $3.60, 14 cents below prices from this time in 2023. The national average was more than 30 cents per gallon higher at $3.91. Wholesale ethanol held steady at $2.16. In heating fuels, natural gas prices spiked 30 cents at the Henry Hub reporting site to $2.69 per MMBtu.
