Iowa boaters are preparing their craft for the state’s many waterways as the boating season kicks off fully this Memorial Day weekend. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Boating Law Administrator and Education Coordinator Susan Stocker, Memorial Day is often the first time on the water each season for most boaters, which means many may need a refresher on the state’s boating laws and safety regulations. She adds, “Recent heavy rain across the state will reduce water clarity and add flood debris to the rivers and larger reservoirs. Boaters will need to use caution and watch for obstacles, including debris floating just under the surface. Regardless of the weather forecast, it will be busy on the water.” Before heading out, boaters should inspect their vessels and ensure lifejackets are in good condition and adequately sized for everyone on board. Additionally, boaters should check fire extinguishers, boat and trailer lights, whistles, and throwable flotation devices. Stocker stresses the importance of designating a sober boat operator and reminds boaters to remove drain plugs during transport to prevent the spread of invasive species.
