Carroll County Rural Roads Fare Well Despite Spring’s Heavy Rains

Carroll County’s rural roads have fared well despite the heavy rains this spring, according to County Engineer Zac Andersen. The past several years were unusually dry, which led to fewer-than-normal reports of washouts and soft spots on gravel roads. Andersen says they are seeing the other sign of the same coin this spring, with above-average rainfall.

Andersen adds that while they have faced some challenges this spring, the Carroll County Secondary Roads Department, which is responsible for overseeing and maintaining over 800 miles of roads, is proactive in addressing issues. While it may not be feasible for them to be aware of every issue as soon as it appears, they are committed to ensuring the safety and quality of our roads.

In general, Andersen says they have not had any major surprises. He was expecting it to be much worse, considering some of the rainfall totals.

While there is always room for improvement, Andersen says he is pleased with the county’s rural roads after the wet spring.

Andersen adds that it is not unusual for issues to appear after storms push through an area. He says the odds are they probably already know about a washout or soft spot, but the public can reach out to the secondary roads department at 712-792-3603 if they have concerns.
