Whiterock Conservancy near Coon Rapids has released the schedule for the upcoming summer educational series, Iowa Rocks! Whiterock Conservancy will welcome Dr. Kata McCarville for an engaging three-part program at the Bur Oak Visitor Center this summer. The events will run from 10 a.m. to noon on June 9, July 21, and Sept. 14, with Dr. McCarville offering rock and fossil identification before and after each talk. The June 9 session is on Iowa rocks and identification, July 21 covers extinctions, and Sept. 14 focuses on soils. McCarville has been a faculty member at Upper Iowa University since 2005 and will guide attendees through Iowa’s diverse geological history, focusing on the unique features of Whiterock Conservancy and its surroundings. Many Iowans may not be aware, but the state’s bedrock contains many fossils, meteor impact evidence, and glacial deposits that hide older formations from Canada and Minnesota. These free events are open to the public. For more information, contact Whiterock Conservancy at 712-790-8221 x2 or email guestinfo@whiterockconservancy.org.
